2014 College Football Playoff Prediction
1. Florida st. (13-0)
Take one look at the Seminole’s regular season schedule and you see they will be heavily favored in every single game. They play only two ranked teams (Clemson and Notre Dame) and two others who could be (Oklahoma st. and Florida). Coming off of an undefeated BCS championship season the main issues will be remaining focused and dealing with the season long target on their back. The Seminoles will finally resemble last years team after a few early season scares, allowing them to take the number 1 seed. Their blowout in the ACC championship game over Virginia Tech shows people how good they can be heading toward the playoff.
VS.
4. Alabama (12-1)
With a question mark at QB for the first time in years, Alabama will look shaky on offense to start the season. However, it will be their heralded defense that lets them down as a young and extremely talented LSU team beats them in Death Valley. They do rebound to end the season, and in a year when the SEC West beats itself up, their beatdown of rival Auburn gets them back in the SEC championship game. They do just enough beating South Carolina to sneak into the playoff as the 4 seed.
Winner: I see this game playing out much like last years National Championship. Alabama starts strong and jumps out to a quick 21 to 3 lead. Jameis Winston looks slow footed and confused against a much faster defense than he has faced all season. After some halftime adjustments, Florida St. makes this a game. However, Bama uses it’s strong run game and is too much down the stretch running out the clock and preventing the comeback.
Final Alabama 34 Florida state 28
2. Oregon (13-0)
Oregon disappointed last season partially due to an injury to Marcus Mariota, but they also just ran into a tough Stanford defense on the farm. They get both Stanford and Michigan st., the two toughest defenses they will face, at Autzen Stadium and will take both games by wider margins than expected. Their two closest contests will come against the same team in the UCLA Bruins. Oregon will wrap up the two seed after beating the Bruins by a touchdown for the second time this season in the PAC 12 championship game.
VS.
3. Ohio st. (13-0)
A full season with a healthy Braxton Miller will not only give Ohio st. a Heisman finalist, but also an undefeated regular season. They will get their revenge against Michigan st., pulling out a last minute win over the Spartans in East Lansing. A very solid Wisconsin team gives them all they can handle in the Big Ten Championship game, but Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes slot just below Oregon as the 3 seed.
Winner: This has the makings of an offensive showdown between two of the highest scoring teams in the county. The two heisman finalists do not disappoint, putting points on the board almost as if the defense is standing still. With it looking like whichever team has the ball last will win, it is the Oregon defense that gets the necessary stop late in the fourth Quarter. Mariota loses the Heisman to Miller but gets his revenge sending the Ducks to the title game.
Final Oregon 42 Ohio state 35
#4 Alabama vs. #2 Oregon
Though Oregon is undefeated and the higher seed, Alabama comes into this game as a 5 point favorite. Pac 12 and Anti SEC fans everyone are outraged taking this as a sign of SEC bias and disrespect. This shows in some of the chippy play from the Duck players as well as rabid fans who have chanted “We Want Bama” all year long. Oregon gets the spark they need on special teams returning a punt to the house putting them up 21 to 14 entering the break. Another quick score on a long run from Mariota gives them the lead they need, and bruising back Thomas Tyner carries the load down the stretch to hold off a late rally by the Bama air attack.
Final Oregon 34 Alabama 27
Top 5: Coast-to-Coast
With the highly contested Stanley Cup Final a few weeks in the rearview mirror, I felt it would be appropriate to let our minds wander into what other East Coast/West Coast Championships we would all be lucky to see. The Stanley Cup features the two largest media markets in the United States, Los Angeles and New York City. For this list, I ignored the middle states of the U.S. and focused more on the coasts. As fans you cannot ask for more than these epic continental dividing clashes:
5. 49ers vs. Patriots
Starting off is a matchup that may come as a surprise to some. Though these two teams do not have any real rivalry, they actually fit the bill quite well. In this game you have two of the largest cities, San Francisco and Boston, each with their own championship history and eight Super Bowl victories between them. Who wouldn’t want to see the contrasting styles of Harbaugh/Kaepernick going against Belichick/Brady?
4. LA Kings vs. NY Rangers
The Kings vs. Rangers is the best the NHL has to offer so of course they had to be included on my list. Because these two teams are the biggest media markets in the country their series will excite even the most mediocre hockey fans, causing them to pick sides based on what coast they live on.
3. Lakers vs. Celtics
Do I really have to explain why this is on the list? This is the best rivalry in the NBA and these two franchises have met twelve different times in the Finals. Enough said. These two cities and teams do not and will not ever like each other.
2. USC vs. Alabama
The biggest shocker on my list comes with USC vs. Alabama, my #2. These two national powerhouses have played only seven times in their history and have not played since 1985. Thus, the reason for my #2 placement. We as fans have been longing for this head-to-head match up in college football and have yet to witness it. How cool would it be to see “Kiffin Bowl” in the new College Football Championship Game.
1. Dodgers vs. Yankees
Finally, #1 on my list pairs the storied rivalry, L.A. Dodgers vs. N.Y. Yankees. Eleven meetings between these two in the World Series and thirty-three Championships between them. What I love most about these teams is their history. This was once a backyard rivalry in the Boroughs of New York that turned into a 3,000 mile battle in 1958. Though much has changed since these two first played, the matchup has remained as desirable as ever.
A Monday Mariner Masterpiece
This has to be a sure fire win for the Mariners. With King Felix on the mound today, there is no way the mariners lose in Yankee Stadium. Something about the new Yankee Stadium seems to mesh well with the king. Hernandez has has been absolutely dominant there in his last 6 starts going 4-1 with a 1.18 ERA. He is also coming off of his best pitching performance of the season against the Angels on Wednesday, where he was one out from a complete game. This along with the fact that the Yankees are without Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira spells a long day for the Yankee lineup.
Prediction: Mariners 6 Yankees 1
Felix cruises through 8 inning striking out 8 while giving up only 5 hits one of which is a solo shot.
First Ever Mock Draft 2014!
Houston | Jadeveon Clowney DE | Houston takes the best player on the board to pair him with JJ Watt. In a division with Andrew Luck they need to get after the QB.
Clevland/trade | Johnny manziel QB | First major trade only have to give up there early second round pick and next years second rounder. Get QB of future.
Jacksonville | khalil Mack DE/OLB | Got jumped by Cleveland but Mack is impressive athlete and fits well as hybrid in Gus Bradley’s system.
St. Louis/trade | Sammy watkins WR | Tough choice between him and a LT but need to give Sam Bradford one last chance with actual #1 caliber receiver to pair with Tavon Austin
Oakland | Blake Bortles QB | Wanted Sammy watkins but great choice to take QB that can sit behind matt Schaub and learn for a year.
Atlanta | Greg Robinson OT | Didn’t quite unfold the way falcons want but they get a much needed OT in an attempt to keep Matt Ryan upright
Tampa Bay | Mike Evans WR | May have taken Maziel but end up with his teammate who is a great fit opposite of Vincent Jackson
Minnesota | Teddy Bridgewater QB | Really like his leadership and game tape despite tough pro day. Can get some experience behind Matt Cassel as the Christian Ponder Experience should be over.
Buffalo | Jake Matthews OT | Tackle is spot Buffalo could use an upgrade and Matthews grades out slightly ahead of Lewan and can play right tackle as he did his junior season until he eventually slides to the left side.
Detroit | Ryan Shazier OLB | May be a bit of a reach but Lions defense needs some help and shazier is a very solid addition who can play either OLB position.
Tennessee | Kyle Fuller CB | Tennessee needs help at the cornerback position and Fuller has the size that seems to be the trend in the NFL now. Good combinations of size, speed, and hands.
New York G | Eric Ebron TE | Eli manning needs a go to weapon and playmaker on offense. Great fit with Ebron who is athletic and pays like a WR with a TE body.
St. Louis | Taylor Lewan OT | Rams score with this pick as Lewan could have gone easily in the top 7. Some off the field issues ,but a huge body and has a little mean streak im sure Sam Bradford will appreciate.
Chicago | Aaron Donald DT | Defense was atrocious last season and Aaron Donald is a high motor guy who can get some pass rush up the middle for Chicago.
Pittsburg | Darqueze Dennard CB | Pittsburg need some youth and depth at the corner position. Dennard is a physical corner in a division with AJ green and Josh Gordon.
Dallas | Dee Ford DE | Some call this a reach, some thought ford could have gone top ten after the run Auburn went on last season. Dallas needs to replace Demarcus ware and add youth to the DE position.
Baltimore | Ha ha Clinton-dix FS | The Ravens can pair DIX with Matt Elam to for a dynamic safety tandem. Strong instincts and cover/ball skills.
New York J | Marquise lee WR | The Jets might be the one team that needs to draft a WR. Not impressed with the Eric Decker pick up this offseason. In order to truly judge Geno Smith he needs a reviver to throw to.
Miami | Zack Martin OT | Miami obviously needs help on the offensive line after the Bullygate that happened this last year. Martin is versatile and can play right away.
Arizona | Anthony Barr DE/OLb | Arizona decides against a QB of the future as they feel they are merely one player away from a championship team even with Carson Palmer. Barr could be difference maker on a already strong D.
Green Bay | CJ Mosley ILB | Green Bay still needs defensive help and an upgrade at the inside linebacker position. Mosley was one of the most consistant tacklers and leaders on a great Alabama defenses.
Philadelphia | Brandin Cooks WR | The eagles release Desean Jackson and replace him with another burner from the pac-12. Cooks will slide right into Chip Kelly’s offense and be a solid contributor right away.
Kansas City | Odel Beckham Jr. WR | I am just not a huge fan of Dwayne Bowe. The Chiefs need another weapon for Alex Smith and Beckham has big play ability and speed that will surely help.
San Francisco/trade | Justin Gilbert CB | San Francisco desperately needs youth at CB and Gilbert has the physical tools that are needed. Solid pick and good value as he once was projected a fringe top 10 so worth losing a pick trading up.
San Diego | Rashede Hageman DT | Can Play 3-4 nose tackle in this defense to help in run support. Corner is another need but Gilbert who they could have used went one pick before.
Cleveland | Bradley Roby CB | After trading up to land their franchise QB they add a CB to shore up the secondary opposite of Joe Haden. Roby is a great athlete who uses his length to his advantage well.
New Orleans | Jason Verret CB | Saints added Champ Bailey but he will probably play safely as he is losing a step. This pick isn’t sexy but adds youth and depth as Verret is a solid cover corner with great ball skills.
Carolina | Cody Latimer WR | Carolina can only go in two directions. WR or OT. With Steve smith leaving Latimer fills in a huge hole and gives Cam a weapon.
New England | Jace Amaro TE | New England is so successful with two athletic tight ends. This pic also adds depth with recent injuries to Gronk. Amaro has strong hands and uses his body well to shield off the defense.
Cincinnati/trade | Morgan Moses OT | Strong Trade for Cincinnati as they grab a monster tackle to bolster their offensive line and grab an extra pick in the meantime.
Denver | Timmy Jernigan DT | Broncos get a high motor DT who despite being undersized is very productive. Should help shore up defense that faltered as the year went on. Can be rotational player who doesn’t have to play NT.
Jacksonville/trade with Seattle | Derek Carr QB | Missed out on Manziel but take Derek Carr to sit behind Chad Henne most likely only for a few games. This gets them in front of Houston who probably would have drafted Carr.
